Maintenance IS Required

So school term is over. I did 16 credits in just over 4 weeks. Whew. I never ever want to have to do that again. I don't know if I could pull that outta my ass a second time. Now is time to start a new one. One of these days I will be done. For now, though, I am taking a few days as a breather, then back to work. Next I gotta go pass my Comptia A+ exam. I am sure i can do it. I just need to do it.

I haven't really worked on anything new yet. However I did do something I think you might find interesting. My friend has had an XYZ Da Vinci jr. 1.0 3d printer for a couple of years now. It has decided to crap out on him. He asked me if I wanted to try to get it working again. After a "Hell yeah!" (because I love tinkering) he brought it over and I started researching possible causes. Troubleshooting this printer is similar to troubleshooting computer issues, so I did the most obvious things first. Was it plugged in? Was it turned on? Did it have a file to print? So I turned it on. Looked fine. I took the little nozzle declogger and pushed it through a couple of times. Not clogged. So I set it to try one of the standard print jobs already loaded onto the machine.

It printed like 2 inches of the base, then nothing came out of the extruder nozzle. It was still moving like it was extruding, but it wasn't. So I canceled the print job and decided to go further into the extruder. Really give it a cleaning. Maybe there was a clog deeper than my declogging tool could reach.

This is what I found inside of the extruder casing:

In case you don't know what you are looking at....that is PLA melted and hardened to the OUTSIDE of the extruder nozzle, INSIDE the casing. Yup, I started to attempt to chip away at it, but it was so hardened I could only get some away from the nozzle. It was stuck on there tight, and I worry that if I try any futher it would ruin the nozzle and/or the mini circuit board that is in there.

That is not what is supposed to happen.

While I am unsure the exact cause of this, I have a hypothesis. When I removed the spool of filament, parts of it broke off easily. Just chipped away till way back on the spool. That is also not supposed to happen. This friend got a bad patch from XYZ. Because in this model there is a chip in the spool that allows it to be used. If you get off brand the chip is absent and it won't work. My theory is that it was flaking off inside the extruder and got hot and make this mess. Who knows how many times my friend tried using it that way, adding more and more material until we got here.

However if he had done regular maintenance he might have found this sooner. Might have been avoided, might not. But now, definitely the only options are getting a new exdtruder ($70) or getting a new printer.

You are supposed to do a maintenance check every 200 hours. You should be cleaning the nozzle every other print job. The problem with this model is they advertise it as being low maintenance, which my friend thought meant he didn't need to do anything. Granted, there are newer models available now. This is an older printer. They have been seeling them for at least 3 years. It is possible they fixed any issues like this, or added some kind of sensor system.

But there you go. Nasty mess. I will leave you with more pics of the mess, and come back in a week when I have more progress on my projects to report.

Testing out the HP.

So, instead of sitting around moping I decided to see what I can do with what I got. I went to Radio Shack (yeah, they still exist...barely) and got some de gooping cleaner. Keyboard still doesn't work. I am going to try it every day for a week and see if that changes.

Meanwhile, I tested out my HP with the Windows Movie Maker. I don't know. It worked ok for the 9 second test I did, but it looks a bit pixelated. I don't know if that is really how it looks or if it is the display on this laptop. Here are the results of the test:
What do you think? Too pixelated? Or fine? Argh. I wish I had a million trillion dollars.

Argh. I need an apothacary cabinet

Today is the first day in a long time I have felt up to cleaning. My work area is in my bedroom, which is small-ish. Mainly because right now it is fricken cold and we don't have heat in the whole house. We have used space heaters all winter. It is more efficient and cheaper to just heat one area (i.e. my room) and hang out there than try to get the rest of the house in livable temperature just for a few hours.

So as I was tidying I came to the conclusion that I need an apothecary cabinet. As it stands now, this is how I am storing all my bits and baubles for my crafts and stop mo:

Not very efficient.  That is after I tidied. As you can imagine, I can't find a damn thing in that mess. I have tried to organize it a bit. The green tub in the picture on the right has all my adhesives in it. And if you look under the table and ignore the stuff stuffed on top, you can see the baskets and boxes with which I have attempted to claim some sort of order.

I just have so many small things. That is necessary, of course, when working with teeny, tiny sets and furniture and props. But it makes it very very difficult to find anything. And after I have organized, every time I organize, I have to stop and think "Where did I put that again?". Of course, I never really remember, so I end up tearing apart all the boxes until I have found what I am looking for. Then it feels like too much work to put everything back, only to have to do it all over again when I am looking for something else. That is usually when the floor  gets swallowed up in boxes and craft doo-dads.

If I had the money, the apothecary cabinet would be the ideal storage place. In case you have no flipping clue what I am talking about, this is an apothecary cabinet:

There are many different types, but I really like this one. Of course, after a bit I would probably need more than one. Craft doo-dads tend to multiply when one is sleeping. And you can't throw anything out. You might need it for something someday.

No, I am not a craft hoarder. Why do you ask? :)
