Software Woes...AGAIN...

3/20/2017

It seems the struggle with stop motion animation software is a continual one. I finally got Pinnacle to work the way I need it to, then they did some upgrades and removed the functionality I needed. I need/want to be able to micro manage the timeline. Used to be able to that. Now I can't get it to let me.

Dragonframe still doesn't work. Got a hold of support, who told me to roll back a version. That works...sort of. I cannot get my camera to capture with it. I got the Canon T5i because it is specifically listed as a compatible camera in Dragonframe documentation. While I can take pictures with it in Pinnacle still, and I can use it with the Canon live capture software, when I try to use Dragonframe I get a message that it failed to capture. I cannot get a live view. And even though the camera is set to manual and I have it plugged into the outlet, I keep getting warnings from Dragonframe that neither are true. This is getting old. I can use the crappy webcam with Dragonframe. Not what I want to use. No control, and I can't place it whereever I want to. And it is CRAPPY. No quality at all. So something is happening during communication between the Canon and Dragonframe. There is a setting I am not finding in the documentation. There may be a patch that I can't get because they would rather I move up to the newest version, which doesn't work with my computer.

Grr argh sigh.

*EDIT: Ok, so I just let Pinnacle update AGAIN. Micro managing ability is BACK! Whew. No matter what I do I can't get Dragonframe to connect correctly with my camera. I found an additional document. Still didn't help. Stop Motion centric software MY ASS.

Still working on getting to a place where I can animate. So nothing really to post yet, But I wanted to at least put something here so I don't completely forget to update this. Today is Feb 1st, which means a couple of things.

1. That FAWM (February Album Writing Month) is upon us. I didn't register yet, cause I wasn't sure I was going to try it. I think I will. I just need to get in there and register and get going on it. Now is a good time, because I am still waiting for a job. I can spend some of the waiting time writing music. I think I will try to post more about it this year. I vow to check in once a week at least for FAWM. Shall se see if that sticks? :P

2. Tomorrow is my birthday. I have no friends here yet. I turn 42. It kind of depresses me that I will turn an iconic number alone. I was going to try to go to an event going on where they are showing the movie Groundhog Day, with games and prizes, etc. Sounded nice and social for my birthday. However starting tonight there is a snow storm warning. Which means that once again, if it snows, the whole city will be at a standstill. I am living on a hill, which makes it even harder. I don't have a car, which also raises the difficulty level. The thought of looking for a place I don't know where it is, in a city I am still only vaguely familliar with, on a bus system I don't know yet, in weather that is possibly treacherous...Yeah, sadly, I will spend my birthday alone. I wanted to throw a party Douglas Adams would be proud of. But alas, moving too close to birthday and unemployment curtailed that idea months ago. Ah, well.

Life will settle in eventually, right? It will all fall into place and all work out, etc etc etc.

I really need to get creative with my titles. :P It has only been a week and half, but I thought I would post anyway. Just kidding. I am trying to be better at keeping up with this thing. It feels like it has been months, though the calendar says it hasn't been. I really had fun playing with the Dremmel. I haven't taken it out for anything else yet. I am itching to, but I am worried about using it when I don't need to and killing a project that would have otherwise been fine.

I have been writing, but haven't really finished anything. This week we have had issues at work with the servers, issues at home with an injured ankle, and emotional issues dealing with this time of year. Also, someone in France has decided to usem y debit card number to try to purchase Formula One tickets (of all the fucking things), so they had to close down my debit card. My plan for this weekend was to price out alginate and get it ordered. Nope. I cannot do anything online now. Grrr argh. At least my new bank had the courtesy to call me first. They gave me a chance to get cash before they closed for the weekend. And they also replaced the money and flagged my card number. That is much better than what my previous bank did. My previous bank let the bastards clear out my account completely, from clear across the country, minutes after I used it here, so clearly it WASN'T ME. I had to jump through a ton of hoops to get it cncelled, a ton of hoops to get my money back, I had to threaten to sue in order to get my legally mandated 45 day credit until it was cleared up. I had to send a police report 4 times before they acknowledged they recieved it. At least this time the transaction was flagged, they saw it was from another country, and called me right away.

But I digress....I am good at that. :) Now that my ankle is doing a bit better and I am a bit more mobile, i will et going on it all again. I shot some footage a few weeks ago with my iPad. I am not happy with it, but I am trying to work with it. Main issue....the damn autofocus. Even after I have put it in focus lock it still kept refocusing. This is why I need a good camera damn it. I am getting tired of this crap. Makes it hard to get anything done. I have been playing around with the pictures in Pinnacle on my iPad. Not much help, but I think if I futz with it a bit more I may make something workable out of it. I tried transferring the pictures to my computer and working with them there. Every one of them were blurry. How the hell did it lose quality? All I did was copy them over. There are 400 some odd pictures. I guess I could try to email each one to myself. Or I could just say screw it and see what I can do in the ipad. Unless one of you wants to spring for a brand new camera? Yeah, didn't think so. I am also feeling jealous. Last fall a girl did an awesome Doctor Who stop mo, in the style of the old Rankin Bass Rudolph stop mos. it was very well done. And I am green with envy, cause I want to do THAT. And if I had money for the equipment I need, I could. I don't begrudge her the props. Cause she totally deserves them. I just want to be there too, and I am not yet.

Ok...enough of the whining. Time to get back to work.

Patience is draining...

It is taking forever for me to get this music to the point I feel comfortable recording it. And my mandolin has a buzz to it, which I didn't realize before. Generally I either just do the mando background or live. I haven't really tried to record it as a solo instrument. Obviously this one isn't a solo instrument. It is a loaner from a friend. I sold mine when I needed money.

So now I need to make a decision. Do I continue trying to get a good sound, between bouts of pain and med haze, or do I try to solve this issue another way? Or do I just call it good and lay the buzzy, clunky music in as is. Honestly, I thought this would be the easiest part of the video. I am sure if I wasn't dealing with everything it might have been easier. Argh. Sigh.

Well, I have to get some dishes done, then I will make a decision. Whatever happens, I vow to get the video uploaded to the voting site before tomorrow. It is already almost March. Now that I finally have the shooting and editing done I really want to show people.

I worked really hard yesterday to get all my shooting done. I worked from 7am till 10:30pm, refinishing sets, building mini deck chairs, making the guys move in SAND. Which, by the way, is really, really hard. Getting them to stay in the deck chairs was even harder. I finally got what I thought was my last shot. When I tried to transfer my images from my SD card to my computer, my computer decided it was hungry and ATE half my shots. I usually copy the images over to the computer then clear the card for the next round of shooting. Not only did it just copy half, it ate the remaining images from my SD card. That card is blank.  This was at 10:30pm last night. I was going to write about it last night, but I just wanted to cry and throw a temper tantrum. This post would have been an incoherent rant of expletives and sobs.

Fortunately it didn't eat everything, and coincidentally the point it stopped was actually a good place, as it was during a scene change. In the last scene they fight over the powerbook then head to the beach. The images lost are just from the beach scene. So I compiled the pictures for the powerbook scene and rendered the video. Now I just have to reshoot the beach scene.

Fortifying myself with eggs and coffee and web comics then heading to work.  Oh - I also did some playing with the audio the other day. I cut it up into pieces - or spidgetts as I decided to call them. When I was deciding on what to do I wrote down each sentence or group of sentences I wanted to brainstorm. Each spidgett follows that pattern. I played with adding them into the video in Windows Movie Maker. It doesn't work if I already have the scene rendered to video, but when I went back to compiling the pictures I could decide where each spidgett starts. Can't add sound effects or a music track though. It makes it too big and it doesn't want to render it into video. As it doesn't have multi track capability I would have to render the movie, add the next layer of sound, render the movie, add the next layer of sound. So I will still have to figure that one out. But at least I can add Douglas Adams voice in now.

*SIGH* How low budget am I? I can't wait till I find a real paying job so I can get a camera that doesn't decide to autofocus even when autofocus is turned off, a computer with more umph and storage space, software that will work better for this, a camera that will actually allow me to capture to that software, and actual puppets instead of toys. And real lighting instead of a pair of desk lamps.

Bits and stuff

It has been over a week since I last posted. I have been so good, too. A lot has happened in my personal life to delay the video and posting. After several bullshit things that happened at my part time temp job I quit. I told the temp agency I wanted to move on and they asked me for 10 days. So I have been scrambling to try and see if I can get myself a permanent position to replace that income. Hopefully the temp agency will find me something else, but I am not going to count on it. I am currently in a part time contract with a non profit, which does not pay enough to stand alone but necessitates replacement job also be part time. I have several plans in the works, so we shall see what shakes out at the end.

And....today is my birthday. Which puts me one more year over 35 and another year closer to 40. Today I am going to watch Groundhog Day, laze in bed, go do my non profit contract job for a few hours then wallow in cake with friends at a local dessert shop. I used to love birthdays, but as I get older I realize the things I wanted to do with my life most likely aren't going to happen. Every new birthday that passes becomes a reminder of what I will never be. Maybe this year I will change that and celebrate what I might possibly do. Or not.

Tomorrow I don't work anywhere, so I plan on working on video again. This part is the second and third sentence. I have a new scene for about every other sentence. As it changes subject quickly, that makes it about right for 4 to 5 second scenes. The sentence is "Early attempts were dogged by hardware problems. The hardware was rock based, which meant that it was heavy, cumbersome and above all very hard." Remember the title of the audio is Getting The Book Invented Properly. I have made a rocky background so it will look like they are in a cave. I have made a grey table and found several flatt-ish rocks for them to carry in and get buried under. Getting this to work properly shall be a challenge but one I am up for.

Tomorrow.

Now...Groundhog day. :) Happy bloody birthday to me.

I have been working more on furniture. I know, I know....I need to decide on my next storyline first. But I have been feeling a bit lonely and depressed lately so it has been hard to think of something that wasn't sad and depressing. So I made a new sofa. And a new end table. And a new coffee table. I think I like the sofa better than the old one. For one thing, the seat cushion is integrated, taking away a lot of the problems I had with cushion movement with the other one. I still see the flaws in it, but I think it will work. I will keep playing with it. I did a 12 second video to test out the new look. I used my old wall with the window and the old carpet. I also decided while I was experimenting I would try to play with how the guy moves. The last one he looked like he was skating. I don't know. As his legs are not articulated it may be hard to do anything better. He looks a bit fluttery here to me.

So here is the result of my little test:
I think it worked ok. I am noticing the curtain movement and the floor movement, which is new. I have to work this afternoon, so when I get home I will see why it bubbled like that. If you have any suggestions about the movement they will be heartily welcomed. Unless it is to tell me it is shit, in which case fuck off I don't want to hear it.
