Music shennanigans...

Well....I don't have a whole lot to post about. I have been busy and sick and tired and allerging. I have not completed the video yet, nor have I had time to do any real shooting. My computer had issues yesterday. It crashed 3 times, the 3rd time I had to recover it. I am glad I set restore points and backup images. It has been teetering for months now. About once a week it crashes and tells me it can't recognize the BIOS. Well, duh...mainly that is because it does not have a BIOS. It's firmware, as it is for most 64 bit machines, is EFI. If I open the computer in safe mode, then restart it from safe mode, it has been able to fix tiself. I am not really sure "fix" is the word I want to use here. This is a refurbished laptop. I am sure someone probably flashed a BIOS machine with an EFI, and now the workarounds to make that work are crumbling down. When I go to the system window, it says I have a BIOS installed. I have been in the firmware...it is most definitely not BIOS, it is EFI. Computers is usually my job. I know how to tell. What I don't know is why the discrepentcy. Even if it was flashed with EFI, Windows should read it as an EFI, not a BIOS. And yup...people who thought EFI and BIOS were the same thing...they are very different. A BIOS uses a master boot record table to tell your computer how to load the OS. EFI uses a GPT table to tell your computer how to load the OS. If it is looking for a MBR table, and it ia an EFI firmware, it will not find it and think it can't load. Because it is getting the wrong instructions. Probably more than you wanted to know, but this is my blog and I wanted to impart my knowledge. :P

Anyway...so after months of this happening, yesterday it finally crashed enough times in a row that I had to recover it, which is not a good thing. As I am unsure how to fix the workaround, I can't really fix this permanently. As I am worried about my cmputer quitting completely on me, I hesitate to use it for anything heavy duty, like filming.

I bit the bullet and decided I needed to replace this mess. I don't have a lot of money, as I am still unemployed, but I have been socking a little bit away every month so I can have deposit money for when I get a job and am ready to get my own place again. Through my school I get a discount on Dells, and Dell is currently in addition running a back to school discount. I was able to find a gaming laptop with all the bells and whistles I want and need for $750. I checked the Dell site not logged into the school's portal or using the student discount. It would have cost me $1000. So I decided that it was worth it to make sure I have a laptop I can use for school, and something I can use afterward. If I wait until I have a job, which may be after I am done with school, I would have to pay the full price for it. And I wouldn't have something to use when this one finally is unrecoverable. It will have a dedicated graphics card, 12GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. And the processor is good enough I can up it to 32GB of RAM if I want to later. So when that arrives I will do some more filming, and post it up here. But it will have to wait now until that is possible. I don't dare kill this thing before I have something else to do school with. And the new laptop probably will work with Dragonframe. Extra bonus. So why do I feel so guilty about spending money on it? :P

I also have been writing and perfecting some songs, which I intend to record and put up on Soundcloud when I get the new computer. I will link them in my music tab. I am excited to play music at Orycon again this year. Last year I was newly laid off and trying to figure out how  to make ends meet and how to get schooling. This year I am still unemployed, but living in town so I don't have to worry about where to stay. I was already planning on going...bought my membership a few months ago. This will just be the icing on the cake. I love doing panels too. We'll see if they allow me to do any. I put in to do a few at Anglicon too. We'll see if they want me. I am not a Seattlite, and don't know any of the concom, so probably not. But I thought I would throw my hat in there anyway.

Ok...back to homework and research paper. Will post back here when I have more to report.

Software Woes...AGAIN...

It seems the struggle with stop motion animation software is a continual one. I finally got Pinnacle to work the way I need it to, then they did some upgrades and removed the functionality I needed. I need/want to be able to micro manage the timeline. Used to be able to that. Now I can't get it to let me.

Dragonframe still doesn't work. Got a hold of support, who told me to roll back a version. That works...sort of. I cannot get my camera to capture with it. I got the Canon T5i because it is specifically listed as a compatible camera in Dragonframe documentation. While I can take pictures with it in Pinnacle still, and I can use it with the Canon live capture software, when I try to use Dragonframe I get a message that it failed to capture. I cannot get a live view. And even though the camera is set to manual and I have it plugged into the outlet, I keep getting warnings from Dragonframe that neither are true. This is getting old. I can use the crappy webcam with Dragonframe. Not what I want to use. No control, and I can't place it whereever I want to. And it is CRAPPY. No quality at all. So something is happening during communication between the Canon and Dragonframe. There is a setting I am not finding in the documentation. There may be a patch that I can't get because they would rather I move up to the newest version, which doesn't work with my computer.

Grr argh sigh.

*EDIT: Ok, so I just let Pinnacle update AGAIN. Micro managing ability is BACK! Whew. No matter what I do I can't get Dragonframe to connect correctly with my camera. I found an additional document. Still didn't help. Stop Motion centric software MY ASS.

More Animation Software Aggrevation

I was not very happy with the way that octopus video turned out. It is kind of fuzzy. It is jumpy (that part is my fault, I was not patient enough to get the right frames and tried to duplicate, which I know rarely works well in stop mo). So I started looking online for Pinnacle studio tutorials. With the newer version, you can shoot stop mo directly to computer, and it has fewer requirements than Dragonframe. They are having a sale, so instead of $120 to upgrade, it is only $69.95. I have been struggling long and hard, and right now, the point of everything I am doing is to figure out the best way to use the equipment I've got. I can still use version 18 if 20 does not work with my laptop. So I decided to go for it. I may regret it, but it isn't as bad as the $300 oopsy with Dragonframe. Which according to thier tech specs SHOULD work with this laptop and does NOT. Won't even open. BTW, thier support is CRAP. I do not reccomend Dragonframe, even if it turns out to work great after I have the money to upgrade my laptop.

Pinnacle upgrade is downloading right now. I guestimate I will know if I have chosen wisely or chosen poorly in about 30 minutes. Fortunately for me, all I will be out is $70 and my frustration. No melty faces or whatever. My plan is to do a little playing around tonight, and if I can get it to recognize my camera, shoot and whatnot, I will do some actual shooting tomorrow and Periscope it. See if I can get a better video. If not, I will be disappointed.

The other thing I have been thinking over is the 72 hour Horror Film challenge by Eugene Film Society. This year it is going on Oct. 22-24. I mean, it was a frustrating blast last year. And if I can get this to shoot better, I may be able to get a better video than last year. But do I want to deal with it? I have other things I want to work on. BUT.....it would also be a great way to test the new setup, see what I can do with it. I have committed to a DnD game on the Saturday. With how much time was wasted last year with the computer shutting down and losing 3 hours of work, I may be able to do it. I have to decide.....I already committed to the game, and they are counting on me, so if I do it I would have to budget 5 hours out of that to go do that. THough that is tentative, and we have no final go ahead on the game. I suppose I can put my hat in the ring, then decide to drop out if I want.

Argh. Why can't I just be normal and not obsessed with this stop motion crap? I mean I love it. I LOVE IT. I dream about it. I literally cry when something goes wrong, I want to do it well so badly. When it goes right, it goes so right. I wish I had more of a natural aptitude for this, and it wasn't so hard for me to get a good finished product. Sigh

MonkeyJam still sucks.

And in other news, the sky is still blue and the grass is still green. :P

Yeah, I spent the majority of the day yesterday trying to get the damn thing to work. GGRRR. So that is not an option...still. I got a friend's copy of Dragon Stop Mo, which is pretty rad, except you have to be able to capture to your computer, whcih my camera does not allow. I tried to jailbreak it using CHDK, which creates a bootable SD card that will run short scripts and allow your camera to do stuff you normally can't. That didn't help either, as I can't get Dragon to recognize any of my USB ports.  So until I win the lotto and have enough money to get real equipment, it's back to the drawing board.

I got Windows Live Movie Maker to work....sort of. It is really jerky, no matter how incremental the pictures are. I can't really control how much time there is between each pic. Unless I add an effect, which makes it jerky anyway.

So now another friend gave me her old copy of After Effects. I am going to give that a try and see if I can at least get each scene sorted.

And it isn't helping that I have been blessed with a huge allergy attack the last few days. Even with my medication I was finding it hard to function yesterday. I chugged Benedryl before bed last night, which at the very least helped me sleep last night. Still feeling it today, but not as itchy.

Will report back with results of After Effects Experiment.....
